The pentagram, or the pentacle is originally an ancient Babylonian symbol for the planet Venus. Long before Jesus's appearance the Babylonians discovered that the path of Venus on astrological schemes formed a pentacle which was thereafter associated with the mentioned planet.
Later the pentacle was used by the Phytagoreans as their own symbol for their sect of mysticists and mathematicians. Among other things the Pythagoreans signed their letters with the pentacle. Because of the Phytagoreans great knowledge of the world ordinary people often referred to them as magicians and demon worshippers. A pentacle which points upwards is a symbol of construction or evolution towards a higher state of being; From mineral to micro-organisms, from fishes to lizards, from monkey to human, from human to god etc.
A pentacle which points downwards symbolize the development from a higher state of being to a lower, deconstruction or atavism. Man to monkey, micro-organism to mineral etc.
The mathematical principle of The Golden Section is obvious in the pentacle. The Golden Section can be used to calculate almost everything in the universe. The Golden Section is often used in art and design. This because things designed with aid of The Golden Section often look more harmonic and well proportioned. One example is the western musical scale which is made after The Golden Section.
Why the pentacle really did become a symbol of evil is a later issue and can be traced back to early "Christian" Gnostic sects. The Gnostics believed that an evil god created the universe as a trap for the human soul. The mission of the human soul according to the Gnostics was to first find the one thing of value hidden in this world and then get out of this universe and find and become one with the true good creator. When the Gnostics learned about The Golden Section they saw this as a fingerprint of the evil creator and since the pentacle is one of the figures which is totally composed of Golden Sections this became a symbol of the evil side.
The Gnostics calculated The Golden Section to be 616 out of 1000. This is why 616 is the Number Of The Beast in early versions of the Bible; Book Of Revelation. This number was later transformed into the well-known 666. A more accurate calculation would give the number 618.
