SELF WRESTLING
2004
30 X 30 cm (11'' X 11'')
Oil and acrylic on wood, gloss varnish.

Two very similar looking naked men are wrestling each other. Note that this picture is painted in such a manner that it's brighter towards the upper left corner, the fade is no photographic effect.

A man is fighting a monstrous Phoenix bird - the giver of life. A life giver out of control is sometimes the greatest monster of them all.

I love the bravery of this man... you see his determination in the eye contact, although the defensive position leaves respect for the beasts power. What a challenge for mankind.

Allt en konstnär gör är ju någon form av självporträtt. Hur det gick? Jag har huvudet upp och fötterna ner fortfarande.

Considdering this is refered to as a "martial arts" picture at the top, it strikes me as odd that the man would fight with such a poor posture.. isnt this the first thing any art will teach you? - It does, without doubt, depict bravery and determination, but also suggests a considderable lack of self-controll by the way the weapon is being weilded, and the complete lack of skelital stability in the stance. I disagree, however, with what Jacob Matters says about the man being in a 'defensive position' - his weight is forward, his weapon raised, his back leg bent and head down - If anything, this is an agressive stance (if rather a poor one) But this could be refering to the old phrase; "Attack is the best form of defence"

Damn. I love the mist-enshrouded effect you achieved on this one. Bravo.

I find quite nasty to make comments about the fight posture of the person facing the phoenix. The combat is perhaps about to begin and some sort of salute comes first. I like it a lot, and the fogy atmosphere is an important detail for me.
