Olof Palme's Square
2006
60 X 60 cm (23'' X 23'')
Oil on board

The construction and real estate company Norrvidden Fastigheter AB has signed up a few artists for a brainstorming regarding Olof Palme's Square in Sundsvall city. Each participating artist is given a square metre piece of wall in Världshuset (The World House) during the re-building (rebuilding because of the O'Learys fire) for putting their ideas on display. On the 18th of March eventually sell-able works are auctioned out.
When I got this assignment it was kind of a dilemma for me, since I take pride in only painting those visions I get during certain states of mind - how on Earth should I fit Olof Palme's Square into that manifesto?
I did not have to wait long for the solution though. I went home and laid down for some rest, fell asleep, and had this peculiar dream.
In the dream I found myself on an enormous grassy plain, where I met Olof Palme in the shape of a gargoyle. He landed beside me and told me that he flew around and maintained this large idyllic meadow (in some kind of heaven I presume). He said:
"I'm fine here, I have wings and many animals to care for and hunt, and they taste just like you want them to taste without one knowing it beforehand. If you want to make a plaza bearing my name then make it so that it resembles the manner in which I live here", and then he showed me a square-shaped patch of grass with a tree and a few pokémonish animals, whole thing surrounded by water.
Here are pictures from when this painting was sold by auction.
